The Protected Designation of Origin "Ortrugo dei Colli Piacentini" (or "Ortrugo - Colli Piacentini") identifies a particular type of white wine, also produced in the Sparkling and Spumante versions.
Grapes
All the wines of the denomination must be produced using grapes coming from vineyards composed, for at least 90%, of the Ortrugo vine. Up to a maximum of 10% of the wine can also be produced from other non-aromatic grape varieties of similar colour, suitable by law for cultivation in Emilia Romagna.
Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties
The basic version (11% vol.) of the "Ortrugo dei Colli Piacentini" wine is light straw-coloured, tending towards greenish; it exudes a characteristic and delicate aroma, which goes well with a dry or mouthful, still and enriched by a bitterish aftertaste. In the Sparkling variant (11% vol.), enriched with an evanescent froth, the taste becomes fresh and fine. Spumante (11% vol.), on the other hand, can have a brut, dry or mouthful.
Grape production area
The production area, included in the province of Piacenza, coincides with a hilly area with varied climatic characteristics.
Specificity and historical notes
Piacenza has always been a land of wines and it is believed that the first vines in the area were planted by the paleoliguri, well before the advent of Rome.
