The "Dolcetto d'Asti" is a red wine from Piemonte, protected by a Protected Designation of Origin. It is also produced in the Superior version.
Grapes
The "Dolcetto d'Asti" is produced exclusively in purity, with 100% grapes from vineyards consisting only of Dolcetto vine.
Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties
The "Dolcetto d'Asti", is a wine with a bright ruby red colour and a characteristic, pleasant and vinous aroma. On the palate it is dry, velvety and harmonious and has a moderate acidity. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 11,50% vol. The same organoleptic characteristics are also found in the Superiore variant, which differs in a slightly higher alcohol content, equal to 12,50% vol.
Grape production area
The area where "Dolcetto d'Asti" was born coincides with the hilly system that starts from Nizza Monferrato and rises towards the south. The preferred soils of the reference vine are those that are not very fertile, mainly calcareous and marly, and with a position that is not excessively sunny.
Specificity and historical notes
Dolcetto is one of the oldest native Piemontese vines. Its first mention in a document dates back to the first decade of the 1500s and is signed by the poet Giovan Giorgio Allione d'Asti who in one of his works names the "Dosset de Mongardin" (village near Asti).
