The "Grignolino d'Asti" is a red wine from Piemonte protected by the Protected Designation of Origin


Grapes

The grapes used for the production of "Grignolino d'Asti" come from vineyards at least 90% of which are Grignolino vines and the remainder, but not more than 10%, from Freisa.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The "Grignolino d'Asti" is a wine with a ruby red colour, which can be more or less intense and which, with ageing, tends to turn to an orange shade. The aroma that accompanies it is delicate, with a characteristic scent and is combined with a dry, slightly tannic, pleasant and bitter taste, with a persistent aftertaste. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 11% vol.


Grape production area

The "Grignolino d'Asti" was born in a limited area, between Asti and Casale Monferrato. A rather complex territory, difficult to cultivate.


Specificity and historical notes

On the origins of the name Grignolino there are two different reconstructions, There are those who make it derive from "grignòle", Piedmont term for grape seeds. According to others, however, the derivation would be to "grignare", which means laughing. The dialectal origin, confirmed by both theses, reinforces the idea of a wine strongly linked to the territory, so much so as to become one of the most symbolic of Piemonte.
