Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese

The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) "Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese" identifies a Piedmontese red wine.


Grapes

The composition of the vineyards from which the grapes are obtained to produce the "Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese" must include, for at least 90%, the Grignolino vine. Together with this, the grapes of the Freisa vine can also contribute to the production, provided that they do not exceed 10% of the total.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The "Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese" has a light ruby red colour that tends towards orange with ageing. Its aroma is characteristic and delicate and goes well with a parched, slightly tannic and pleasantly bitter taste, enhanced by a characteristic aftertaste. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 11% vol.


Grape production area

The area of production falls in the so-called Monferrato casalese, also known as basso Monferrato. It is a hilly area, where climatic conditions are strongly influenced by the presence of the Alps and the sea. The result is an optimal climate for the vine plant.


Specificity and historical notes

For many years, and until the end of the Second World War, the Monferrato Casalese was an area where only Grignolino grapes were grown, which were then vinified elsewhere. From the middle of the 20th century, instead, a complete wine-making process developed, which contributed to the economic revival of the area.
