The red wine of the "Lessona" Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) is produced in the basic version and in the Riserva variant.
Grapes
The grapes used for the production of "Lessona" wines must come from vineyards composed of Nebbiolo vines, for a minimum share of 85%. The Vespolina and Uva Rara vines can also contribute to the vinification process, up to a maximum of 15%.
Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties
Both types of "Lessona" wines have a garnet red aspect, to which the ageing gives orange nuances. The scent they emanate is characteristic, fine and intense, with clear hints of violet. On the palate they are parched, persistent and pleasantly tannic wines, with a marked and clear mineral flavour. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 12% vol.
Grape production area
"Lessona" wines are produced in the territory of the municipality of the same name, in the province of Biella. An area of hilly terrain, with average altitudes of around 350 metres above sea level and rather mild temperatures.
Specificity and historical notes
The wine produced in the Lessona area was already famous in 1600. The first written trace of an important winemaking activity dates back to about two centuries before. In 1436, in fact, in the State archives of the city of Biella, the purchase and sale of a vineyard was recorded for the first time.
