Provincia di Mantova

The Protected Geographical Indication "Province of Mantua" identifies 3 types of wines: white (also sparkling and passito), red (also sparkling, sweet, lovable, novello and raisin), rosé (also sparkling). There are also productions with indication of vine: Ancellotta, Barbera, Cabernet franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Chardonnay, Cortese, Corvina, Fortana, Garganega, Groppello gentile, Malvasia bianca, Marzemino, Merlot, Molinara, Negrara, Pinot Bianco, Pinot grigio , Pinot Noir, Riesling, Rondinella, Sangiovese, Sauvignon.


Grapes

The "Province of Mantua" IGP wines must be obtained from vines suitable for cultivation in Lombardy. For the production of wines with grape specification, at least 85% of the corresponding grapes must be used, while the remaining 15% may come from any vine, of the same color, suitable for the Lombardy Region. In the case of the specification of the Cabernet, Lambrusco, Trebbiano and Riesling vines, further percentage restrictions are set for production, as indicated in the specification.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white (9.5% vol.), Also sparkling, has a straw yellow color, combined with a pleasant, harmonious smell and a full, sometimes dabby taste. The white wine (12% vol.) Is distinguished by its color tending towards amber with aging, its intense and fruity aroma and its characteristic, savory flavor. The red version (9.5% vol.), Also sparkling, is ruby-colored, more or less intense, also tending to garnet, with a vinous, harmonious smell and a dry to sweet, savory flavor. The novello (11% vol.) Is differentiated by the red color, the fruity, young perfume and the dry, fresh taste. Passito red (12% vol.), On the other hand, tends to garnet, has an intense aroma and a typical, harmonious flavor. Rosé (9.5% vol.), Also sparkling, has a pink color, a delicate scent and a dry, harmonious taste.


Grape production area

The production area includes 4 types of territory: moraine hills, high plains, medium plains, low plains.


Specificity and historical notes

The discovery of a bowl of grape seeds on the morainic hills, dating back to the Neolithic period, attests to the ancient origin of wine production in this area.
