Grapes

The "Provincia di Pavia" PGI wines must be obtained from vines suitable for cultivation in Lombardy. At least 85% of the corresponding blend must be used for the production of wines with a specific grape variety. The remaining 15%, on the other hand, can be produced from any grape variety of the same colour, suitable for the Lombardy Region.

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white wine (minimum total alcoholic strength by volume 9% vol.), even sparkling, has a straw yellow color, combined with an intense, fruity and fresh taste, from dry to sweet, sometimes lively. The white passito (15% vol.) is distinguished by its amber colour, its intense fruity bouquet and its sweet, velvety flavour. The red version (9% vol.), even sparkling, is ruby red in colour, with a fruity aroma and harmonious flavour, from dry to sweet, sometimes lively. The novello (11% vol.) differs in its fruity aroma and harmonious flavour, from dry to sweet, sometimes lively. The raisin red (15% vol.) is red tending towards garnet, has an intense aroma and a sweet, velvety flavour. The rosé (9% vol.), even sparkling, has a pale pink to cherry colour, has an intense persistent perfume and a dry to sweet, sometimes lively taste.

Grape production area

The production area includes the entire Oltrepò Pavese area, with the exception of the coastal area of the Po, as well as the municipalities of Miradolo Terme, Inverno and Monteleone.

Specificity and historical notes

Wine growing in the province of Pavia underwent a substantial renewal in the 20th century due to the phylloxera insect, which led to a major change in the cultivation of local vines traditionally characterized by 225 native vines.
