"Casteller" is the Protected Designation of Origin reserved for a specific red wine produced in the province of Trento. There are no specific indications or specifications other than the name.
Grapes
The Casteller wine is made by vinifying grapes from the Merlot grape variety, which must make up at least 50% of the total, which is joined by Schiava Grossa, Schiava Gentile, Lambrusco a Foglia Frastagliata, Lagrein and Teroldego which, alone or together can not exceed 50%.
Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties
At first glance, the Casteller is presented in a pleasant ruby red shade, the intensity of which may vary depending on the production. It has a pleasant vinous odour, which is combined with a characteristic, dry and harmonious taste. It reaches an alcohol content of 11% vol.
Grape production area
The production area covers the territory of 48 municipalities, all in the province of Trento, divided between the Adige Valley, the Cembra Valley, the Vallagarina, the Sarca Valley and, even if only partially, the Valsugana. The climate is characterized by cold, snowy winters and hot summers.
Specificity and historical notes
The name Casteller derives from the homonymous hill cultivated with vines, located south of Trento. The name of this appreciated wine makes its first official appearance in a historical text in 1673, within the Chronicles of the Council of Trento, written by Michelangelo Mariani.
