Scavigna

"Scavigna" is a Protected Designation of Origin that identifies three types of wine: White, Red and Rosé.


Grapes

The Scavigna Bianco is made from grapes from vineyards composed of aromatic Traminer (up to a maximum of 50%), Chardonnay (maximum 30%), Pinot Bianco (maximum 10%) and Riesling Italico (maximum 10%). Other white grapes, suitable for cultivation in Calabria, are also allowed, but not beyond the total quota of 45%. For the production of Rosso and Rosato, on the other hand, the following varieties are prescribed: Aglianico (maximum 60%), Magliocco (maximum 20%) and Marsigliana nera (maximum 20%). Also in this case, always within the mild of 45%, is allowed the use of other black grapes, grown in the region.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The appearance of the white wine Scavigna (minimum total alcoholic strength by volume 10.5% vol.) is white, with yellow reflections that tend to greenish, the smell is characteristic, fresh, winy and very pleasant, the palate is dry, full, harmonious and pleasantly fruity. The Rosato (11% vol.) has a pink colour that can have different degrees of intensity; the aroma is delicate and characteristic; it combines with a savoury, fresh, dry, harmonious and elegant flavour. In the Rosso (11.5% vol.) you can admire a pleasant ruby shade, more or less intense; the aroma is characteristic and pleasant and is combined with a dry, robust and harmonious taste.


Grape production area

The production area is rather limited and concerns only the municipalities of Falerna and Nocera Terinese, in the province of Catanzaro.


Specificity and historical notes

The Scavigna is an ancient wine, its name comes from the Greek and means to hoe. A precise reference to local viticulture, where the soil is excavated to plant the vines.
