Locride

The Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) "Locride" wines are produced in the following types: white, white passito, red (with the new variant) and rosé.


Grapes

The Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) "Locride" is reserved for wines produced with grapes from vines suitable for cultivation in the Calabria Region. The specification of the Montonico vine is reserved for wines at least 85% made with this vine, while the remaining 15% can be obtained from vines suitable for cultivation in Calabria.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

White "Locride" Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) wines have a straw-yellow color, an intense, characteristic aroma and a fresh, savory flavor. The Passito Montonico, instead, has an intense straw yellow color, sometimes amber-colored, with an intense aroma and a sweet, delicate and delicate taste. The red is characterized by the ruby ​​red color, the vinous, characteristic hints and the intense, harmonious flavor. The new red is distinguished by its deep red color, intense, fruity aroma and harmonious taste. Finally, the rosé is more or less intense pink, combined with a fine, characteristic smell and a fresh, harmonious flavor. The minimum total alcholic strength by volume is 10.50% vol. for white, 11.00% vol. for the new red and rosé, 11.50% vol. for red and 15.00% vol. for the Passito Montonico.


Grape production area

The production area covers an area of more than 1200 square kilometres, from the middle Ionian to the Aspromonte massif. The morphological composition is diversified, from the coast to the hills and mountains.


Specificity and historical notes

The techniques used in the area for the cultivation of the vine are traditionally indicated for the vinification in red, especially for types of structured wines.
