Tharros

The Protected Geographical Indication "Tharros" includes three types of wine: White (also sparkling), Red (also sparkling and Novello) and Rosé (also sparkling).


Grapes

Tharros' PGIs must be obtained from vines suitable for cultivation in Sardegna. The specification of the vine provides that this (with the exception of the varieties Cannonau, Carignano, Girò, Malvasia, Monica, Moscato, Nasco, Nuragus, Semidano, Vermentino, and Vernaccia) represents a minimum percentage of 85% of the entire blend used for winemaking, while the remaining 15% can be obtained from any vine suitable for cultivation in Sardegna.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The White, also in the Sparkling variant, has a color from paper-white to amber yellow, with a characteristic smell and flavor from dry to sweet. The Red, also Sparkling, is a light ruby to garnet colour, with a characteristic aroma and a taste that ranges from dry to sweet. The Novello version, on the other hand, stands out for its colour, which ranges from red with violet to ruby shades, and for its flavour, which ranges from dry to sweet. Finally, the Rosato type is characterized by its colour, from pale pink to deep pink, combined with a typical shent and a taste that ranges from dry to sweet. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 10% vol. for white, 10. 50% vol. for sparkling wines and for simple rosé, 11% vol. for red and new red.  


Grape production area

The production area covers most of the province of Oristano.


Specificity and historical notes

As in the rest of Sardegna, also in this territory the presence of the cultivation of vine dates back to the Nuragic period (about XIII century B.C.). In Cabras, precisely in the locality of Sa Osa, grape seeds and the remains of wine vases have been found.
