Monferrato
Monferrato is a Protected Designation of Origin that identifies the following types of wine: Red (also Novello), White, Chiaretto (also called Ciaret), Dolcetto (also Novello), Casalese Cortese, Freisa (also Novello) and Nebbiolo (also Superiore).
Grapes
The grapes used in the vinification of Monferrato depend on the type. For wines without any specification is provided for the use of a mixed grape, which includes one or more grape varieties of similar color, non-aromatic, suitable for cultivation in Piemonte. In Monferrato Chiaretto, on the other hand, at least 85% of the grapes of Barbera, Bonarda, Cabernet franc, Cabernet sauvignon, Dolcetto, Freisa, Grignolino, Pinot nero and/or Nebbiolo are present, either alone or in combination, together with those of other non-aromatic varieties (maximum 15%). For Dolcetto, Freisa and Casalese cortese, on the other hand, 85% of the grapes coming from the respective vine are used, possibly added, also in this case, to those of other similar grape varieties. At least 90% of the Nebbiolo grape is used for the Nebbiolo, and other non-aromatic red grapes may be used for a maximum of 10%.
Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties
All Monferrato wines stand out for the richness of their fruity notes, due to the particular composition of the soils where the vines are cultivated. The red Monferrato (minimum total alcoholic strength by volume 11% vol.) is characterized by a vinous and pleasant smell, accompanied by a fresh, dry and sometimes lively flavor. The White (10% vol.), on the other hand, has a straw yellow aspect, a characteristic aroma and a fresh and dry flavour, sometimes lively. Further peculiarities can be found in the variants with particular specifications or indication of grape variety, as punctually reported in the product specification.
Grape production area
The production area coincides with Monferrato, a traditional area of Piemonte, divided between the provinces of Asti and Alessandria. The territory is mainly hilly and for this reason particularly suited to viticulture.
Specificity and historical notes
The viticulture of Monferrato is the result of an ancient tradition and a continuous drive for innovation, which has led local companies to create new wines, often become spearheads of the cellars.
