Freisa di Chieri

"Freisa di Chieri" is a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) that identifies red wines produced in the following variants: Dry, Superiore, Sweet, Sparkling and Spumante.


Grapes

"Freisa di Chieri" wines must be produced with a minimum of 90% of grapes from the Freisa grape variety. For the remaining part, which must not exceed 10%, other non-aromatic black grapes, suitable for cultivation in Piemonte, may be used.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The "Freisa di Chieri" have different organoleptic characteristics but similar perfume: characteristic and delicate, with notes of raspberry, rose and violet. "Secco" (minimum total alcoholic strength by volume of 11% vol.) is ruby red with a garnet hue; the flavour is dry, sometimes lively and slightly acidic, with ageing it becomes harmonious and delicate. The Superiore (12% vol.) has tones from garnet to cherry, with orange reflections in aging; the taste is dry and soft, with possible hints of wood. The Dolce (11% vol.) ranges from ruby red to light cherry and may have violet reflections; the taste is sweet, fresh and sometimes lively. The same is true for Sparkling and Sparkling Wine (11% vol.), with a flavour that in the former is harmonious and elegant, in the latter it can be brut, dry or sweet, always with a pleasant raspberry aftertaste.


Grape production area

The production area is all located within the province of Torino, in a hilly area characterized by mixed calcareous-clayey soils.


Specificity and historical notes

According to the most reliable historical sources, the Chieri vine was born in the area of Chieri and its land of choice is the Collina Torinese. In his famous "Istruzione", Conte Nuvolone mentions it as an unripe, dry and robust wine.
