Palizzi

The Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) "Palizzi" is reserved for two types of wine: red (also in the novello type) and rosé.

Grapes

The wines with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) "Palizzi" must be produced from grapes from black grapes suitable for cultivation in the region of Calabria. Up to a maximum of 15% of the grapes coming from white grapes suitable for cultivation in Calabria can be used.

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The red wine with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) "Palizzi" is characterized by its deep red color, accompanied by an intense characteristic scent and harmonious taste, typical. The new red, on the other hand, stands out for its more or less intense red colour, combined with a complex, fruity aroma and a pleasant, harmonious taste. The rosé is more or less intense pink in colour, exudes a fine, delicate and characteristic perfume and has a fresh, harmonious and pleasant taste. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 11.00% vol. for the new red wine and 13.00% vol. for the red and rosé wines.

Grape production area

The production area is located in the extreme southern part of Calabria, on the coast of the lower Ionian Sea in the Grecanica area, in a hilly and mountainous area that rises rapidly from the Gelsomini coast to Aspromonte.

Specificity and historical notes

Historical evidence states that, until the sixteenth century, boats from France came to the southern Ionian coast of Calabria to buy wine with which to cut the production from beyond the Alps. Today the wine products of this area are considered an excellence for the whole of Calabria and are an important economic resource for the municipalities involved.
