Galatina
The Protected Designation of Origin "Galatina" includes the wines Rosso, Rosso novello, Negroamaro, Negroamaro Riserva, Rosato, Rosato Frizzante, Bianco, Bianco Frizzante and Chardonnay.
Grapes
The "Galatina" Bianco is produced using grapes from vineyards at least 55% of which are Chardonnay and the remaining part (maximum 45%) are other non-aromatic white grapes that can be cultivated by law in the province of Lecce. The Rosso and Rosato, on the other hand, have a minimum of 65% of Negramaro grapes, with which other non-aromatic red grapes can compete. For Chardonnay and Negramaro, where the vine is indicated on the label, the same must represent at least 85% of the blend, given the possibility, even in this case, that for the remaining share of other similar grape varieties compete.
Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties
The white wine (minimum total alcoholic strength by volume 11% vol), also Riserva, has a light straw colour, with possible greenish reflections, a delicate and pleasantly fruity perfume and a dry, characteristic and lively flavour. Rosato and Rosato sparkling (11,50% vol), however, have an appearance that tends to pale cherry, accompanied by a slightly winy, fruity and rightly persistent and a dry and velvety taste. The ruby red colour is more intense (12% vol), embellished with violet reflections; the aroma is vinous, pleasant and equally intense; the flavour is dry, full, robust, velvety, warm and harmonious. In wines with an indication of the vine variety, the organoleptic characteristics are enriched by the peculiarities of the grapes of production, described in detail in the product specification.
Grape production area
Galatina wines are produced in a limited area of the province of Lecce, which covers only eight municipalities.
Specificity and historical notes
The Galatina area is one of the Italian areas with the oldest winemaking tradition and in 1930, together with the whole of Puglia, was recognized as the second region of Italy in the production of wines.
