The Protected Geographical Indication “Avola” includes three types of wines: white, red (also in the “novello” type) and rosé.

Grapes

White, red and rosé "Avola'; PGI wines must be obtained from grapes from one or more varieties suitable for cultivation in the territory of the Region of Sicily.

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume shall be 11,00% vol. The red variant is characterized by a ruby red colour, of varying intensity, accompanied by a fruity aroma and a dry and balanced taste. The minimum alcoholic strength shall be 12,00% vol. Finally, the rosé has a more or less intense pink colour, with a fine, elegant aroma and a dry, balanced flavour. The minimum alcoholic strength shall be 11,50% vol. The versions produced in the "novello"; type can have a minimum total alcoholic strength by volume of 11.00% vol.

Grape production area

The production area includes the entire administrative territory of the municipalities of Avola and Siracusa, a predominantly flat or hilly area. Orography and climate interact decisively with the cultivation of the vine. In particular, the chromatically white and calcareous soils, typical of this area, produce wines of excellent structure, fresh and with an olfactory bouquet characterized by the predominance of fruity aromas.

Specificity and historical notes

The municipalities of Avola and Sracusa have a long and deep-rooted winemaking tradition. This is also testified by the drawing on one of the faces of an ancient coin of Abola (original name of Avola) which represented a bunch of grapes full of grapes.
