Beneventano

The Protected Geographical Indication "Benevento" (or "Beneventano") is reserved for wines: white, even sparkling and passito; red, even in sparkling, passito and novello version; rosé, even sparkling.


Grapes

The "Benevento" PGI wines must be obtained from grapes coming from vineyards made up of one or more vines recognised as suitable for cultivation in the province of Benevento. A minimum quota of 85% is provided for in the case of specification of one of the varieties Aglianico, Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Coda di Volpe, Falanghina, Fiano, Greco, Malvasia (Bianca di Candia), Merlot, Moscato bianco, Piedirosso, Sangiovese, Sciascinoso. Grapes from similarly colored berry varieties may be used, including those suitable for cultivation in the province of Benevento, up to a maximum of 15%. 


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white has a straw yellow colour, accompanied by a dry and sweet flavour, a fruity and floral perfume; the white variant of the raisin wine has a more golden colour, an intense aroma and a sweet or sweet taste. The red has a ruby red colour, a floral, fruity perfume and a dry or sweet flavour; the red passito version differs for its garnet colour, its intense aroma and its sweet or sweet taste; the red novello, on the other hand, has a vinous odour. The pink "Benevento" is pink in colour, with a fruity, floral perfume and a dry flavour. The minimum alcohol content is 10.00% vol. for white, 10.50% vol. for red and rosé, 11.00% vol. for new red and 16.00% vol. for white and raisin red. The parameters vary according to the grape variety used.


Grape production area

The production area is, on the whole, hilly, with reliefs between 200 and 650 meters above sea level, which makes it a conducive environment to the cultivation of the vine (the entire province of Benevento).


Specificity and historical notes

Already in the second half of the 5th century B.C. Plato mentioned in his works the existence of an excellent Benevento wine with a slight smoky aroma.
