Bolgheri

The Protected Designation of Origin "Bolgheri" includes six different types of wines: white, Vermentino, Sauvignon, rosè, red, red Superiore.


Grapes

The white wine can be composed of Vermentino from 0 to 70%, Sauvignon and Trebbiano Toscano from 0 to 40%. White wines can also be added for a maximum of 30%. Vermentino is made up of 85% of the homonymous vine, with which other white grapes can compete, up to a maximum of 15%. Sauvignon, on the other hand, is made up of at least 85% Sauvignon, with a maximum of 15% of white grapes. The basic red, the Superiore and the rosé, are composed, alone or together, of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc (all three with quotas that can reach 100%), Syrah and Sangiovese (both not more than 50%). If necessary, red grapes may be added up to a maximum of 30%.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white (vol. 11%) has a straw yellow colour, the smell is fine and delicate, the taste is dry, harmonious and savoury. Vermentino (vol. 11%), on the other hand, has a straw yellow colour, a delicate and characteristic aroma and a dry, harmonious and soft flavour. The Sauvignon (vol. 10.5%) has a straw-yellow aspect, the aroma is delicate and characteristic, the taste is dry and harmonious. The rosé (vol. 11.5%) has a pink colour, combined with a vinous and delicate aroma and a dry and harmonious flavour. In the red (vol. 11.5%) you can appreciate a color from ruby to garnet, the smell is intensely winy, the flavor is dry and harmonious. The Superiore type (12.5% vol.), on the other hand, has an intense ruby or garnet colour, the aroma is vinous, rich and elegant, the flavour is dry, full, robust and harmonious with a good and elegant structure.


Grape production area

The production area of 'Bolgheri', produced in the municipality of Castagneto Carducci in the province of Livorno, is situated on the foothills overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west, in a portion of the territory with a mild climate, due to the presence of hills and sea.


Specificity and historical notes

The wine-growing tradition in the area of "Bolgheri" is ancient, first dating back to the Etruscans and then to the Romans.
