Campania IGT

The Protected Geographical Indication "Campania" includes the following types of wine: white, also in the sparkling and passito types; red, also in the sparkling, passito, novello and liquoroso types; rosé, also in the sparkling, Passito, Novello and Liquoroso types.


Grapes

The white, red and Rosato 'Campania' Protected Geographical Indication must be obtained from vines suitable for cultivation in the "Regione Campania". The specification of the vines Aglianico, Coda di Volpe, Falanghina, Fiano, Greco, Moscato, Piedirosso, Primitivo, Sciascinoso, is reserved for wines obtained from grapes coming from vineyards composed of at least 85% of the corresponding vines. Grapes from similarly coloured grape varieties, included among those suitable for cultivation in the respective wine-growing areas and administrative units of the "Regione Campania", may contribute to the production, up to a maximum of 15%. 


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white wines with the Protected Geographical Indication "Campania" have a more or less intense straw yellow colour, with a fruity and floral aroma and a dry, balanced flavour. The red version is characterized by an intense ruby red color, a fruity and floral scent, a dry and balanced taste. The rosé has an intense pink colour, exudes a floral odour and has a dry, balanced taste. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 11.50% for all three types. Further specifications, then depending on the varieties used. Finally, the white and black berry versions of the passito have the characteristic colours of the vine of origin, with an intense, floral, fruity aroma and a sweet or sweet, full-bodied, harmonious flavour. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume for both is 11.50% vol.


Grape production area

The production area covers the entire administrative territory of the "Regione Campania".


Specificity and historical notes

Campania was one of the first and most important centres for the settlement, cultivation, study and diffusion of wine growing. It is no coincidence that the great wines of antiquity, such as Falerno, Greco, Faustiniano, Caleno, were produced in Campania. The Campania grape varieties must be considered to all intents and purposes the descendants of the ancient varieties called as Vitis Hellinica, Alinea Gemina, Vitis Apiana, just to name the most important.
