Cesanese del Piglio

"Cesanese del Piglio" or "Piglio" is a Protected Designation of Origin reserved for the homonymous red wine and its variants "Superiore" and "Riserva".


Grapes

In the production, in accordance with the law, at least 90% of the grapes used must come from the Cesanese di Affile or Cesanese comune vines. The remaining 10% can be obtained from complementary grapes, suitable for cultivation in Lazio.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

Ruby red with violet reflections, Cesanese del Piglio is a wine with a good structure and full body, which releases an intense odor with floral and fruity scents. The taste is dry and harmonious. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume shall be 12,00% vol. The Superiore variant, on the other hand, is ruby red, turning to garnet with ageing. Good structure and full body, without roughness. The aroma is intense and ample, with floral and fruity notes while the taste is dry and harmonious, with a pleasant bitterish aftertaste. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume shall be 13,00%. Finally, the Riserva variant, aged at least 20 months, adds to the characteristics already listed a slight hint of wood and reaches 14.00% vol. of alcohol.


Grape production area

The production area is located in the province of Frosinone in central-eastern Lazio, at the foot of the Ernici Mountains.


Specificity and historical notes

The wine-growing tradition in the Piglio area dates back to Roman times and has also resisted the collapse of the empire and the barbarian invasions. This is also confirmed by many written medieval documents, such as agricultural contracts and documents of various kinds.
