Colline Lucchesi

The wines of the Protected Designation of Origin "Colline Lucchesi" are white, red, Sangiovese, Merlot, Vermentino, Sauvignon, Vin Santo and Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice. Rosso, Sangiovese and Merlot are also produced in the Riserva variant.


Grapes

The red is produced with Sangiovese grapes, for a share between 45% and 80%, combined with those of Canaiolo, Merlot and Syrah (between 10% and 50%). In addition, other red grapes, suitable for cultivation in Tuscany, but within the limit of 30% (Aleatico and Moscato up to a maximum of 5%), may be used. White, on the other hand, is obtained from Trebbiano Toscano (40-80%), Chardonnay, Greco, Grechetto, Malvasia, Sauvignon and Vermentino (10-60%). In all wines with an indication of grape variety, however, the same must represent 85% of the total, with the possible addition of other similar grape varieties (maximum 15%). Finally, for Vin Santo is prescribed the use of only vines registered in the National Register of Vine Varieties for wine grapes.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The red (11% vol.) and the Riserva type (11.5% vol.) have a brilliant ruby colour, which, as it ages, tends to turn garnet; the aroma is pleasant and characteristic and the palate is dry, harmonious, soft and lively (if from the vintage). The white wine (10.5% vol.) has a straw-yellow colour, with varying degrees of intensity; the delicate, pleasant and characteristic aroma is accompanied by a dry and harmonious taste. The Vin Santo (16% vol.) is golden yellow, tending towards amber, with a pleasant and harmonious aroma and a sweet, dry and velvety raisin flavour. In the Occhio di Pernice variant (16% vol.), on the other hand, it is pink with garnet highlights, an intense aroma and a sweet, soft and velvety flavour. Finally, wines with an indication of the vine variety have particular characteristics of their origin, which can be traced back to the product specification.


Grape production area

The production area is located in the northern part of Toscana and is characterized, also from a climatic point of view, by the presence of the Apennines and the Tyrrhenian Sea.


Specificity and historical notes

Numerous documents dating back to the year 1000 underline the richness of the area in which, reads, there were hills covered with vines.
