The "Elba Aleatico Passito"; or "Aleatico Passito dell'Elba" Protected Designation of Origin covers the homonymous red wine produced on the Island of Elba. In certain circumstances, the term vine may be used.
Grapes
The "Aleatico Passito dell'Elba" is produced in purity, using only Aleatico grapes, without the addition of other grapes.
Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties
The wine has a rather deep ruby red colour, sometimes with purplish reflections. A shade that tends to turn towards garnet with ageing. The smell is characteristic and intense, as is the taste: full-bodied, harmonious and sweet. It has a minimum alcoholic strength of 19.00% vol.
Grape production area
The "Aleatico Passito dell'Elba" can be produced in all seven municipalities of the island. The morphology of the soils is rather varied and this is an indication of the particular rustic character of the relative vine, capable of adapting to different conditions.
Specificity and historical notes
The Aleatico grape has been known and cultivated for centuries in the area of the Island of Elba. Already in the Renaissance period it was very successful. Wines called special were obtained here, because the high concentration of sugars made them perfect for parties and convivial occasions. In addition, the high content of polyphenols and antioxidants, have led to the attribution of nutritional and restorative properties, especially for the elderly and children.
