Grance Senesi

The wines identified by the "Grance Senesi" Protected Designation of Origin are: red, red Riserva, white, Passito, Vendemmia Tardiva, Canaiolo, Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malvasia Bianca lunga.

Grapes

"Grance Senesi" red and its variant Riserva are produced with grapes from vines composed, for at least 60%, of Sangiovese and, for the remaining portion (maximum 40%), of other red grapes suitable for cultivation in Toscana. For the white, Passito and Vendemmia Tardiva, on the other hand, a minimum 60% of Trebbiano and Malvasia bianca lunga is prescribed, used alone or in combination and combined with other white grapes identified as for the reds. Finally, in the production of wines with an indication of the grape variety, the latter must represent at least 85% of the total.

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The red wine (12% vol.) is ruby red in colour and, as it ages, tends towards garnet; the aroma is vinous and pleasant, with hints of fruit; the flavour is dry and harmonious, with marked complexity. In the Riserva (13.5% vol.) the aromas are more complex, with possible hints of wood and spices, and the taste is rightly tannic and with good persistence. The white wine (11% vol.) is straw yellow, with a delicate and fruity aroma and a dry, lively, fresh flavour with good acidity. In the Passito (17% vol.) the shade becomes golden yellow, the smell is harmonious, with hints of honey and dried fruit, while the taste is soft, warm and elegant sweetness. Similar characteristics also apply to the Vendemmia Tardiva (15% vol.), which is distinguished by a delicate and persistent smell. The variants with an indication of the vine also have further peculiarities, linked to the specific blend, which the product specification describes in detail.

Grape production area

The production area is located in the province of Siena and involves a territory with a slight hilly trend and rather mild temperatures.

Specificity and historical notes

The Grance, born in the thirteenth century on the initiative of the Hospital of Santa Maria della Scala in Siena, were fortified farms in charge of the control of agricultural land. From 1400 onwards, viticulture became more and more important within the fortified farms.
