Greco di Bianco

The Protected Designation of Origin "Greco di Bianco", identifies a white wine passito, produced in Calabria. 


Grapes

The reference vine for the production of Greco di Bianco is Greco, which must be present in the vineyards for not less than 95%. The remaining part (maximum 5%) may be mixed with other white grapes, provided that they can be grown in Calabria.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

Greco di Bianco is a pleasant yellow to golden colour, possibly embellished with amber reflections. The smell is alcoholic and ethereal, characteristic of the wine. On the palate it is sweet or sweet, soft, warm, harmonious and enriched by a typical aftertaste. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume shall be 17%


Grape production area

The production area, rather limited, winds along the Ionian coast, in the province of Reggio Calabria. The climate varies from sub-humid to sub airid, with a significant lack of water


Specificity and historical notes

Greco di Bianco was the first wine in the province of Reggio Calabria to win DOC recognition. Its arrival in the region is dated back to the seventh century BC, by a Greek settler. In the period of Magna Graecia this grape, very common, was called "aminea" that is "not red".
