Lacrima di Morro

"Lacrima di Morro", or "Lacrima di Morro d'Alba", is a protected designation of origin (PDO) that identifies a red wine and its variants Superiore and Passito.


Grapes

In the production of Lacrima di Morro d'Alba wines, at least 85% of the grapes used must come from vineyards made up of the Lacrima di Morro vine. Other black grapes suitable for cultivation in the Marche region may also be used, up to a maximum of 15%.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties Lacrima di Morro (minimum total alcoholic strength by volume 11% vol.) and its Superiore variant (12% vol.) are wines with a deep ruby red colour, accompanied by a pleasant and intense aroma and an equally pleasant, soft and characteristic flavour. In the Passito, on the other hand, the colour becomes red, with different degrees of intensity and, in some cases, with a tendency towards garnet. The aroma is characteristic, even in this case more or less intense, and the taste is harmonious and velvety. The alcohol content is 15% vol.


Grape production area

A small fraction of the "Alto Adige" wines are produced in the plains, the rest are in the medium hilly and hilly area.


Specificity and historical notes

The cultivation of vines and the production of wine, in the area of Lacrima di Morro, underwent a strong development during the Roman domination. With the fall of the Empire, the witness was collected by the monastic orders present in those places, which maintained and refined the traditional techniques.
