Lago di Caldaro o Caldaro o Kalterersee o Kalterer

The Protected Designation of Origin "Lago di Caldaro" identifies a particular type of red wine, also produced in the variants Scelto, Classico, Classico Superiore, Scelto classico and Scelto classico superiore.

Grapes

The wine "Lago di Caldaro", in all its variants, is produced using grapes from vineyards composed of at least 85% of grapes Schiava Grossa, Schiava Gentile and Schiava Grigia. Up to a maximum of 15% of the grapes can be used for other similarly coloured grape varieties, suitable for cultivation in the provinces of Bolzano and Trento.

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

All Lago di Caldaro wines have similar characteristics. Starting with the ruby red aspect, whose intensity varies from clear to medium. The aroma is delicate, pleasant and characteristic, accompanied by a fruity aroma, with hints of cherry, raspberry, bitter almond and violet. On the palate, the taste is soft, harmonious and slightly almond. The result is a structured wine with soft tannins and a pleasant degree of acidity. The alcoholic strength is 10. 5% vol. for the basic version and the Classico, 11% vol. for the Classico Superiore, 11.5% vol. for the Scelto and finally 12% vol. for the Scelto Classico Superiore.

Grape production area

The production area extends from the slopes of the Mendola to the hills on the western side of the Adige Valley. An area with a perfect climate for the vine, thanks to the protection of the alpine massif, which curbs the wind, and the presence of Lake Caldaro.

Specificity and historical notes

Lago di Caldaro wines are born in the heart of South Tyrolean viticulture, which has its roots in 500 B. C. and was already known and appreciated by the Romans.
