Lazio

The Protected Geographical Indication "Lazio" are white wines (also sparkling, spumante, passito and vendemmia tardiva), red wines (also novello, sparkling, spumante, passito and vendemmia tardiva).

Grapes

The "Lazio" PGI is reserved for wines produced from vines suitable for cultivation in Lazio. The specification of the vine is allowed with a minimum quota of 85% of grapes of the corresponding vine. The remaining 15% can be obtained from other vines suitable for cultivation in Lazio.

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white wine (minimum total alcoholic strength by volume of 10,50% vol) is yellow in colour, sometimes tending towards golden or greenish, with a fruity aroma and a dry, savoury flavour. In the vendemmia tardiva variant (15% vol.), on the other hand, it is golden and has a velvety flavour. The passito (16% vol.) tends to amber, with a sweet taste. The sparkling wine (10% vol.) is distinguished by its straw-yellow colour and persistent foam. The red (11% vol.) is ruby to garnet, with a fruity aroma and harmonious flavour, while the passito (16% vol.) and late harvest (15% vol.) variants differ in their velvety taste. The sparkling version (10% vol.) has a deep ruby colour and persistent froth. The rosé (10,50% vol), finally, is cherry-colored with a fine aroma and velvety flavor, while in the sparkling type has purplish reflections and persistent foam.

Grape production area

The production area, which coincides with the entire Lazio region, is characterized by the presence of the coastline, the hills of the volcanic districts and the Apennines.

Specificity and historical notes

The cultivation of the vine in the two main ways, sapling or free, characteristics of the Greek and Etruscan traditions respectively, meet and mix in Lazio, geographically strategic point of the peninsula.
