The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) "Malvasia di Castelnuovo Don Bosco" identifies a red wine, also produced in the Spumante type.
Grapes
The grapes used in the production of "Malvasia di Castelnuovo Don Bosco" wines must necessarily come from vineyards composed of Malvasia di Schierano and/or Malvasia Nera Lunga (between 85% and 100%) and Freisa (maximum 15%).
Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties
The basic version of "Malvasia di Castelnuovo Don Bosco" has a cherry red aspect, accompanied by an aroma characterized by the fragrances of the grapes of origin and by a sweet, aromatic and typical taste. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 10.5% vol. but rises to 11,5% vol. in the productions with indication of vineyard. The Spumante variant, on the other hand, has a more or less intense rosé colour, enhanced by a fine and persistent froth. Also in this case the smell is characterized by a typical aroma of the grapes of origin and the taste is confirmed sweet and slightly aromatic. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 11% vol.
Grape production area
The production area, rather limited, coincides with the north-western area of Monferrato.
Specificity and historical notes
The denomination originates from the town of Castelnuovo Don Bosco, which is part of the production area. This, in turn, takes its name from San Giovanni Bosco, who was the son of winemakers and, according to some reconstructions, has contributed to the notoriety of local viticulture, also by writing a small text dedicated to wine, entitled the "Italian oenologist".
