"Martina" or "Martina franca" is a Protected Designation of Origin that identifies the white wine of the same name and its spumante.
Grapes
In the production of Martina wines are used the grapes of Verdeca vines, with a share from 50 to 65%, Bianco d'Alessano, between 35 and 50%, and then Fiano, Bombino and Malvasia white, which alone or together can not exceed 5%.
Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties
The basic version of Martina wine has a light straw yellow or greenish yellow hue. Its aroma is vinous, characteristic and pleasant and is accompanied by a dry and delicate taste. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 11% vol. In the Spumante version, with the same alcohol content, the colouring is embellished with greenish or golden reflections; the perfume is fragrant, complex, pleasant and characteristic of the refermentation; the taste is fresh, savoury, fine, harmonious and with a taste that ranges from delicate dry to sweet.
Grape production area
The production area, which is rather limited, is part of the wider Murgia area, an area characterised by a dry, warm climate with rather variable rainfall.
Specificity and historical notes
The most accredited historical reconstructions date the beginning of viticulture in Apulia back to a time earlier than the Greek domination, even go back up to 1000 years earlier.
