The Protected Designation of Origin "Moscadello di Montalcino" identifies the white wine of the same name, which can also be produced in the variants Still, Sparkling wine and Vendemmia Tardiva.
Grapes
The "Moscadello di Montalcino" is vinified from grapes from vineyards composed of white Muscat grape (minimum 85%), possibly accompanied by other white grapes suitable for cultivation in Tuscany (maximum 15%).
Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties
The Still and Sparkling wines (both 10.5% vol.) have the same organoleptic characteristics, except for a fine and lively foam that accompanies the second. The color is straw yellow and is accompanied by a characteristic smell, delicate, fresh and persistent. The taste, on the other hand, is aromatic, sweet, harmonious and characteristic of the Moscato grape. The Vendemmia Tardiva (15% vol.) has an aspect ranging from straw yellow to golden, with a characteristic and persistent smell and aromatic taste, sweet and harmonious.
Grape production area
The production area is limited only to the municipality of Montalcino, in the province of Siena, and is bordered by the valleys of the rivers Orcia, Asso and Ombrone. The climate is Mediterranean and tends to be dry.
Specificity and historical notes
Moscadello is the wine par excellence of Montalcino, famous for centuries, so much so as to be much appreciated by illustrious people such as, among others, the writer Pietro Aretino and even Pope Urban VIII.
