Orta Nova
The Protected Designation of Origin "Orta Nova" identifies red and rosé wines.
Grapes
The grape variety for the production of Orta Nova wines is Sangiovese. Other grape varieties, such as Uva di Troia, Montepulciano, Lambrusco Maestri and Trebbiano Toscano, can also be included, either alone or in combination, representing 40% of the total grapes. Lambrusco Maestri and Trebbiano Toscano, however, cannot exceed 10% each.
Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties
Orta Nova red wine has a color that can range from ruby to garnet and that, with aging, is enriched with orange reflections. Its aroma is vinous and pleasant, combined with a dry, harmonious, full-bodied and tannic flavour. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 12% vol. Rosato, on the other hand, has a tonality whose intensity varies depending on the production. The aroma is pleasant and slightly vinous and combined with a dry, harmonious and fresh flavour. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 11.5% vol.
Grape production area
The production area is located in a small part of the province of Foggia: it is a predominantly hilly area, characterised by a warm, arid climate.
Specificity and historical notes
From the agricultural point of view, although already very active in previous times, the area of Orta Nova experienced its greatest splendor under the rule of Rome. It is probably during this phase of growth that the cultivation of the vine begins to play a central role.
