Pomino

The "Pomino" Protected Designation of Origin identifies a wide range of wines: White (also Riserva and Vendemmia Tardiva), Red (also Riserva and Vendemmia Tardiva), Vin Santo, Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Spumante Bianco (also Riserva) and Spumante Rosato (also Riserva)


Grapes

White "Pomino" wines must be vinified from the grapes of the Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay vines which, alone or in combination, must represent a minimum quota of 70%. The same percentage and the same blend, with the addition of Trebbiano, also for Vin Santo. For the two types of Spumante, white and rosé, 70% of Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco and Pinot Noir (alone or combined) are required. In the red wines and in the Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice, 50% (minimum) of Sangiovese grapes and a further 50% of Pinot Noir and Merlot (maximum) are used. On the other hand, in the types with indication of grape variety, this must represent 85% of the total in the vineyards of origin of the grapes. Finally, all types of Pomino wines, up to the missing quotas, allow the use of other similar grape varieties, suitable for cultivation in Toscana.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The red "Pomino" wines (vol. 12-12,5%) show marked hints of mountain fruits, while the taste and smell bring out the typical characteristics of the vines of origin. White wines (vol. 11-12%), on the other hand, are intense and broad in aroma, persistent and variegated. The individual types then emerge for unique peculiarities, which are added to the general ones of the denomination and that can be accurately traced in the product specification.


Grape production area

The production area is located in the north-eastern part of Toscana, in the province of Firenze, in a territory of low hills and medium mountains in the municipality of Rufina.


Specificity and historical notes

The history of the name “Pomino” is closely linked to the figure of “Vittorio degli Albizi” who, in the second half of the 19th century, promoted a project to spread specialized viticulture in Toscana region.
