Roccamonfina
The Protected Geographical Indication "Roccamonfina" includes the following types of wine: White (also Amabile, Frizzante and Passito), Red (also Amabile, Frizzante, Passito and Novello) and Rosato (also Amabile and Frizzante).
Grapes
The 'Roccamonfina' PGIs must be obtained from vines suitable for cultivation in the "provincia di Caserta". The specification of the varieties Aglianico, Coda di Volpe, Falanghina, Fiano, Greco, Piedirosso, Primitivo, Sciascinoso is reserved for wines at least 85% produced with grapes from the corresponding variety. The remaining 15% can be obtained from grapes of the same colour, suitable for cultivation in the "provincia di Caserta". With the specification of the Falanghina vine, the Frizzante and Passito types can also be produced.
Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties
The white "Roccamonfina" PGI wines are straw yellow in colour with a vinous, floral aroma and a dry, savoury flavour. The Passito version is distinguished by its golden yellow colour, intense and persistent aroma and structured, good-acid taste. The Rosso has a ruby red colour tending towards garnet, combined with an intense, fruity bouquet and a dry, tannic flavour. The Rosso Passito, on the other hand, is dark red in colour, exudes an intense persistent odour and has an equally persistent, tannic and savoury taste. The Rosato, finally, is characterized by its pink color, floral scent, fruity and savory taste, typical. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 10.50% vol. for white, 11% vol. for red and rosé, 12.50% vol. for both Passito.
Grape production area
The production area is located in the north-west of the "provincia di Caserta", with its epicentre in the volcanic massif of Roccamonfina.
Specificity and historical notes
Along the Garigliano river, at Roccadevandro, the remains of a small landing place for the transport of wine, destined for the ships of the Romans, waiting at the mouth of the river, have been found. The wine produced in the Ager Falernus, in fact, was renowned for its excellent qualities.
