Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato

The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) "Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato" includes a single type of red wine. In addition, the mention of the vineyard is allowed.


Grapes

The Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato is produced with grapes from the Ruchè (minimum 90%), Barbera and Brachetto vines (which alone or together must not exceed 10% of the total).


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

A characteristic ruby red hue, with violet and orange reflections, identifies the appearance of Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato. The free scent is fruity, slightly aromatic, persistent and, with an adequate aging, also has spicy elements. The palate is medium bodied, dry, round and harmonious, sometimes slightly tannic and accompanied by a slight aromatic aftertaste. In some productions, hints of wood may also emerge. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 12.50% vol.


Grape production area

The production of Ruchè is limited to a rather small territory, consisting of only seven municipalities, all located in the area of Monferrato (Asti), on the left bank of the Tanaro. The area is characterized by hilly terrain and a wealth of woods.


Specificity and historical notes

Ruchè grapes have an aromatic character and a high concentration of sugars. For this reason, over the years, they have been widely used as table fruits or for the production of sweet wines at home. It was thanks to Luigi Cauda, parish priest in Castagnola Monferrato, that, in the 1960s, the dry high quality wine still known today was born.
