Salemi

The Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) "Salemi" identifies the following types of wine: White (also sparkling), Red (also sparkling and Novello), Rosé (also sparkling).


Grapes

The Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) "Salemi", for whites, is reserved for wines made from grapes from vineyards consisting of vines Ansonica, Catarratto, Trebbiano, Grecanico and Damaschino. For the reds, however, can be used all red grapes, suitable for cultivation in Sicilia. The specification of one of the permitted varieties identifies wines produced for at least 85% from grapes of the corresponding types, while the remaining 15% can come from all varieties, berry of the same color, suitable for Sicilia. In case of specification of two varieties, both for white and red, there are additional production constraints, indicated in the specification.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white wines with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) "Salemi" are straw yellow in colour, accompanied by an intense fruity perfume and a dry to sweet, typical and savoury flavour. The Red has a ruby red colour and a complex, fruity aroma with a dry to sweet, harmonious and typical taste. The Rosé type, on the other hand, is cherry-pink in colour, with an intense, persistent aroma and a dry to sweet, typical and characteristic flavour. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 9% vol. for Sparkling wine, 10.50% vol. for White and Rosé wine, 11% vol. for Red and Novello wine.


Grape production area

The production area is located on a predominantly hilly terrain, on the slopes of Monte delle Rose, between the river Mazzaro and the river Grande, in the province of Trapani.


Specificity and historical notes

Al Idrisi, in "Il libro Ruggero", tells of the cultivation of vines in the area of Trapani, at the time of the Normans, but also of the significant development of winemaking in the area, at the end of the eighteenth century, with Woodhouse and the birth of Marsala wine.
