Salina

The Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) "Salina" identifies the following types of wine: white (also sparkling), red (also sparkling and new), pink (also sparkling).


Grapes

Wines with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) "Salina" must be produced from vines suitable for cultivation in Sicilia. The specification of the vine is allowed in case of minimum use of 85% of the corresponding vine, while the remaining 15% can be obtained from another vine, berry of similar color, suitable for Sicilia. In the case of specification of two varieties, additional conditions are provided for, which can be consulted on the specification.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white wines with the protected geographical indication (PGI) "Salina" are straw yellow in colour with an intense, fruity aroma and a dry to sweet, typical, savoury flavour. The red type is characterized by a ruby red colour, an intense, fruity aroma and a dry to sweet, typical, savoury taste. Finally, the rosé colour is a pinkish cherry colour, the aroma is intense, persistent and has a dry to sweet, typical, characteristic flavour. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 9% vol. for sparkling wines, 10.50% vol. for white, red and rosé wines, 11% vol. for new wines.


Grape production area

The production area includes the Eolie Islands archipelago. The archipelago consists of seven major islands to which are added islets and rocks emerging from the sea. The islands are arranged off the northern coast of Sicilia, facing the Tyrrhenian coast of Messina from which they are about 40 km away.


Specificity and historical notes

One of the first testimonies of the wine activity in the Eolie archipelago dates back to 1596, when A. Bacci affirmed the existence of a precious wine obtained from the vines of the Lipari hills.
