Taurasi

The Protected Designation of Origin “Taurasi” includes two types of wines: Red and Red Riserva.


Grapes

The prevailing grape variety used to produce Taurasi reds is that of the Aglianico grape variety. Other non-aromatic red grapes, suitable for cultivation in the province of Avellino can also be used at a maximum rate equals to 15%.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

Taurasi Rosso is a wine with an intense ruby colour, which tends towards garnet with ageing and acquires orange shades. It has a characteristic, ethereal, pleasant aroma with variable intensity, while the flavour is full, dry, harmonious and balanced, enriched by a persistent aftertaste. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume shall be 12%. The same characteristics are also found in Taurasi Rosso Riserva, which however has a slightly higher alcohol content, equal to 12. 50% vol. 


Grape production area

The production area is limited to the territory of 17 municipalities, all belonging to the province of Avellino: a territory characterized by the morphological and climatic profiles typical of the hinterland, with strong temperature ranges, low rainfall and a good number of sunny days during the year. 


Specificity and historical notes

The ancient and deep-rooted winemaking tradition of Taurasi has an illustrious witness: Tito Livio, who in his "Ab Urbe Condita" speaks about the wines that were distributed throughout the empire from that area. Those wines are identified as Hellenic vines. The Aglianico di Taurasi, in fact, is native of Greece and was introduced in Italy around the seventh - sixth century B.C.
