Valdamato

The Protected Geographical Indication "Valdamato" identifies white wines (also in the sparkling, passito and spumante type), red wines (also in the sparkling, passito and novello type), rosé wines (also in the sparkling and spumante type) and with the specification of the vine. For a precise classification of the types of grape involved in the specification you can consult the specification.

Grapes

"Valdamato" PGIs must be obtained from vines suitable for cultivation in Calabria. In case of specification of the vine, a minimum use quota of 85% of the corresponding grapes is foreseen. The remaining 15% can be produced from other vines suitable for cultivation in Calabria.

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white "Valdamato" PGI wines are straw yellow in colour, have an intense characteristic aroma and are fresh and savoury on the palate. The red, on the other hand, is an intense red colour, combined with a complex, characteristic aroma and a harmonious, typical taste. Finally, the rosé is characterized by a more or less intense pink colour, a characteristic, delicate aroma and a harmonious and pleasant flavour. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 10.50% vol. for the white wine and 11% vol. for the red wine. The parameters may vary according to the vine variety and the type of wine: for a more precise characterization, please refer to the information contained in the specification.

Grape production area

The production area includes the right and left banks of the Lamato river.

Specificity and historical notes

The river Lamato, formerly called Lametos, left its deposits downstream of the Plain of Sant'Eufemia, between Capo Suvero and Capo Pizzo, greatly increasing the fertility of the soils cultivated with vines since ancient times.
