Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva

Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) includes the homonymous white wine produced in the Marche.


Grapes

Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva is produced with a prevalence (minimum 85%) of grapes from the Verdicchio vine, while the remainder can be used for other white grapes, as long as they are suitable for cultivation in the Marche.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The appearance of tVerdicchio Matelica Riserva is straw yellow. The bouquet is delicate and characterized by a great olfactory complexity, with ample hints of toasted almonds, cedar and honey. This variety of aromas is accompanied by a structured, rich and opulent, warm and enveloping taste. The result is a wine that in its youth looks grumpy but as time progresses it becomes full, complex and harmonious. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 12.50% vol.


Grape production area

A small fraction of the "Alto Adige" wines are produced in the plains, the rest are in the medium hilly and hilly area.


Specificity and historical notes

Already at the time of the Piceni the vine was widespread in the production area of Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva. It was in the Roman period, however, that the wines of this area were refined and became known, so as to end up in the writings of the great classical authors. The end of the Roman Empire, the domination of the barbarians and the centuries that followed marked a strong phase of decline, which ended with the advent of the Church State, which began an agricultural revival.
