Alghero

The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) "Alghero" includes more than 20 types of wines: basic white, sparkling, ppumante and passito; Red basic, novello, liquoroso e riserva; basic and sparkling rosé; Torbato base and spumante; Sauvignon, Chardonnay base and spumante; Basic and riserva Cabernet; Basic and riserva Merlot; base and riserva Sangiovese, “Cagnulari” or “Cagniulari”; Sparkling “Vermentino”.


Grapes

The white, rosé and red "Alghero" wines may be obtained from one or more vines suitable for cultivation in Sardegna. They consist of 85% of the following grapes: Torbato, Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Cabernet, Merlot, Sangiovese, Cagnulari or Cagniulari and Vermentino. Grapes with similarly colored berries, belonging to vines suitable for cultivation in the region of Sardinia, may also contribute to the production, up to a maximum of 15%.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The "Alghero" wines have a good structural balance, are savory with marked hints of salinity. The whites (minimum total alcoholic strength by volume 10-11% vol.) are deep straw yellow in colour, or gold tending towards amber (Passito, 13.5% vol.), with slight greenish reflections (Sauvignon, Chardonay), the aroma is pleasant, delicate and fruity, the taste is savoury, harmonious and full. The Spumante(11.5% vol.), on the other hand, are straw yellow in colour, full or unloaded (Vermentino), with a fine, effervescent (Torbato) or persistent froth; the aroma is pleasant, fruity; the flavour ranges from brut to sweet, fruity and harmonious. The rosés (vol. 10.5%), pink in colour, have a vinous, delicate and pleasant aroma; the flavour is harmonious, dry or soft. The rosé spumante has a fine, effervescent froth. The red wines, on the other hand (vol. 11-12.5%), are ruby red in colour.


Grape production area

The area of production of "Alghero" wines is called Nurra Algherese located in the north-west of Sardinia, the area is mainly flat, has slight hills and towards the Tyrrhenian Sea is characterized by the presence of limestone cliffs.


Specificity and historical notes

The viticultural cultivation in the Alghero Nurra dates back to the Spanish dominations. Together with this, the wide variety of vines used and the environmental and geological variety combine to make Alghero a product of undoubted quality and value.
