Civitella d'Agliano

The Protected Geographical Indication "Civitella d'Agliano" includes three types of wine: white (also in the sparkling type), red (also in the sparkling and novello type) and rosé (also sparkling).


Grapes

The "Civitella d'Agliano" PGI wines must be obtained from grapes from vineyards made up of one or more of the correspondingly coloured grape varieties, suitable for cultivation in the Lazio Region. The IGT "Civitella d'Agliano" with the specification of the Malvasia, Sangiovese, Trebbiano, Grechetto rosso, Grechetto and Chardonnay vines is reserved for wines obtained from grapes coming from vineyards made up of at least 85% of the corresponding vine. Grapes from other grape varieties of similar colour may be used to produce this wine, up to a maximum of 15%.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white "Civitella d'Agliano" PGI wines have a yellow colour, sometimes tending towards golden or greenish, with an intense, fruity aroma and a dry, savoury flavour. The red version has a ruby colour, tending towards garnet with ageing, a complex and fruity aroma and a harmonious taste. The new red colour differs, ruby red with violet reflections. Finally, the rosé is characterized by a more or less intense cherry colour, a fine perfume and a delicate, velvety flavour. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 10.00% vol. for white, red and rosé wines, 11.00% vol. for new red wines.


Grape production area

The production area includes the entire administrative territory of Civitella d'Agliano, in the province of Viterbo.


Specificity and historical notes

The territory of Civitella D'Agliano falls in the area of ancient southern Etruria, dominated by the cities of Volsinii, now Orvieto, and Nova Volsinii, now Bolsena. Among the Etruscans the cultivation of the vine reached a remarkable progress. In Gravisca, the ancient port of Tarquinia, and in the ancient Statonia, in the territory of Vulci, already in 540-530 BC the vineyards were able to provide sufficient production to fuel a significant external trade.
