Collina Torinese

"Collina Torinese" is a Protected Designation of Origin that includes different types of wines: Rosso, Rosso novello, Barbera, Bonarda, Malvasia and Pelaverga (or Cari).

Grapes

"Collina Torinese" Rosso and its new variant are produced with grapes from vineyards composed of at least 60% Barbera grape, combined with a share of at least 25% of Freisa. Other non-aromatic red grapes, allowed to be cultivated in Piedmont, may also contribute to the production of the wine. For the production of wines with a specific indication (Barbera, Bonarda, Malvasia and Pelaverga) it is necessary to use at least 85% of grapes from the relevant vine. The remaining part may be made up of other grape varieties of similar colour, always suitable for cultivation in Piedmont.

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The Rosso (minimum total alcoholic strength by volume 10,50% vol) and Rosso novello (11% vol) are ruby in colour, with different degrees of intensity. The aroma is characteristic and vinous, combined with a dry and harmonious taste. The Barbera (10,50% vol) is also of an intense ruby red colour, with the same olfactory characteristics; on the palate, however, it is dry, fresh, harmonious and full-bodied. Bonarda (10,50% vol), on the other hand, has a less intense ruby red colour, a vinous and intense bouquet and a dry and characteristic flavour. In Malvasia (10% vol), the color turns to cherry red, the smell becomes fresher and more fragrant, with a reference to the scents of the grapes of origin. On the palate it is sweet and slightly aromatic. Finally, Pelaverga o Cari (10% vol) is cherry-coloured, with a fragrant smell and a sweet, pleasant and characteristic flavour.

Grape production area

The production area extends over the hills in the province of Turin.

Specificity and historical notes

The most characteristic of "Collina Torinese" wines is undoubtedly Cari, a light wine, which in the past was elected as the protagonist of all festive occasions and that the elderly cultivated in small quantities, for domestic use.
