Maremma Toscana

The Protected Designation of Origin "Maremma Toscana" identifies red, white and rosé wines, also produced in the passito, novello, sparkling wine and late harvest varieties. It also includes Vin Santo and numerous single-varietal wines: Ansonica, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Trebbiano, Vermentino, Viognier, Alicante, Cabernet, Cabernet Sauvignon, Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo, Merlot, Sangiovese and Syrah. Some of these can be sparkling wine, as indicated in the product specification.

Grapes

The Maremma Toscana white wines, including the Spumante, Passito and Vendemmia Tardiva varieties, are produced with at least 40% of grapes from the Trebbiano Toscano and Vermentino vines, alone or in combination. In the Vin Santo, instead, there are Trebbiano Toscano and Malvasia (even up to 100%). Otherwise, for the reds a minimum 40% of Sangiovese is required and for rosés at least 40% of Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo. All single vines, finally, require a minimum of 85% of specific grapes from the relative vine. In all productions it is possible to use, to complete the missing parts, other similar to berry grapes, suitable for cultivation in Toscana.

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The red wines, ruby in colour with violet reflections, have characteristics influenced by the greater or lesser presence of Sangiovese. In the basic version they show greater aromatic complexity, with fruity and spicy notes. The same applies to rosè, which has ruby reflections, delicate aromas and a fresh, dry (or sweet) and slightly acidic taste. The white wines have a straw yellow aspect, combined with a fine and delicate perfume, in which the fruity and floral notes can become more accentuated. The palate is dry, fresh and harmonious. Further peculiarities of the denomination are found in the wines with particular vinification (Passito, Vendemmia tardiva, Spumante) and in the single-variety, and are all indicated in the product specification.

Grape production area

The production area coincides with the province of Grosseto, in the south of Toscana.

Specificity and historical notes

Viticulture in the area of ​​the Maremma Toscana has undoubtedly Etruscan origins, as revealed by numerous archaeological finds.
