Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale is a PDO that identifies a specific type of red wine, without variants.


Grapes

The Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale is produced with single-variety vinification, using exclusively grapes from the Primitivo vine.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

A red wine with an intense tonality, with nuances that tend to ruby red. The Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale has a complex and full bouquet, sometimes accompanied by a hint of plum. The taste is sweet and velvety, of medium acidity. It reaches a minimum total alcoholic strength by volume of 16.00% vol.


Grape production area

Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale is produced between two geographical areas with quite different characteristics: the Ionic Arch and the Salento peninsula. These are two areas with significant differences, especially from the climate's point of view, the Jonian area is milder and the Salento area more humid.


Specificity and historical notes

According to the reconstruction of Giuseppe Musci, Director of the Consorzio Antifilosserico of the province of Bari between the end of 1800 and the beginning of 1900, the first selection of the Primitivo vine dates back to 179 A.D., by a priest from Gioia del Colle. Its arrival in Manduria, however, is much more recent: it is attributed to the Countess Sabini di Altamura at the end of the nineteenth century.
