Valle del Tirso

The Protected Geographical Indication "Valle del Tirso" identifies the following types of wine: White (also sparkling), Red (also sparkling and Novello) and Rosé (also sparkling).


Grapes

Valle del Tirso PGI wines must be obtained from vines suitable for cultivation in Sardegna. The specification of the vine (with the exception of the varieties Cannonau, Carignano, Girò, Malvasia, Monica, Moscato, Nasco, Nuragus, Semidano, Vermentino, and Vernaccia) provides for the presence of the same vine for a minimum percentage equals to 85%, while the remaining 15% can be obtained from any vine suitable for cultivation in Sardegna. The specification of the vine is also allowed for the sparkling and new red berry types.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The White, also Sparkling, has a color from paper-white to amber yellow, combined with a characteristic smell and flavor from dry to sweet. The red wines, even the sparkling ones, have a light ruby red to garnet red color, with a characteristic aroma and a taste that ranges from dry to light sweet. The Novello version is distinguished by its color from red with purplish to ruby red shades and the flavor from dry to sweet. Finally, the pink type is characterized by a pale pink to deep pink color, with a characteristic aroma and a dry to sweet flavour. All the Sparkling types have a fine and evanescent foam. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 10% vol. for White, 10.50% vol. for Sparkling wines and simple rosé, 11% vol. for Red and new Red Novello. 


Grape production area

The production area is composed by a sub-floor territory which extends along the sides of the river Tirso until it enters the Golfo di Oristano.


Specificity and historical notes

The wine-growing tradition of the area, which dates back to the Nuragic period, has maintained its fundamental role in the territory over the centuries, as shown in the "Carta de Logu" of the 14th century and the "Rifiorimento della Sardegna" of 1776.
